The Materials Special Interest Group met on Thursday, March 24, 2011 during the second joint conference of the Visual Resources Association (VRA) and the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA). This inaugural meeting attracted thirty attendees from a wide variety of institutions, ranging from those with considerable experience with material collections to some where such a collection is currently just a concept or goal.
MATSIG Moderator Mark Pompelia, Rhode Island School of Design, presented for much of the hour, presenting a summary of what has been a many-month (and continuing) exploration for him of materials libraries and collections across the United States (NYC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Houston). He conveyed some of the myriad questions that confront materials libraries, which led to further discussion by the group. He also presented several samples of materials-related publications from the RISD library.
